Living in Lawton

Southwest Oklahoma's hub, right outside Fort Sill's gates.

Lawton is the largest city in southwest Oklahoma and the one most people moving to Fort Sill end up calling home. The post sits on the city's north edge, so most neighborhoods are a short drive from a gate.

It's a city of distinct sides. The east and central neighborhoods are older and closer to downtown; the west side grew later, with newer subdivisions out toward Cache Road and beyond. Which side fits depends on the gate you'll use and what you want your daily drive to look like.

What's here

  • Fort Sill along the city's northern edge
  • Cameron University
  • Museum of the Great Plains and the Comanche National Museum
  • Elmer Thomas Park and Lake Helen
  • The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, a short drive northwest

Homes in Lawton

The widest range in the area: established brick ranch homes, mid-century neighborhoods near the center of town, and newer construction on the west and southwest sides.

Schools

Most addresses here are served by Lawton Public Schools. Attendance zones can split a neighborhood, so confirm the schools for a specific address with the district. The state publishes a report card for every public school at Oklahoma School Report Cards.

Getting to Fort Sill

Drive time depends on the gate you use and the time of day, and gate hours change. The reliable way to check is to map it from a specific address at the hour you'd be driving.
